Do you remember 1970’s Spanish flamenco dancer postcards?

The ones embellished with embroidered bodices, sequins, lace and gathered ribbon skirts.
As a teenager I tried, and failed, to replicate their splendor. The memory of those gloriously textured cards never left me.
5 years ago I stumbled across a contemporary artist called Julie Cockburn who takes the idea of stitching on postcards to a whole other level. I was hooked on a very different style of image alteration. Julie transforms found photographs and postcards, changing their original images with her imaginative use of collage and threads. She works with a range of found images, including landscapes, however, her primary focus is on portraits.
We’ve all got a postcard or two stashed away somewhere. Stitching into them is a great way to create a new mini art piece to send to family and friends.
